Airport History

In the early 60-ies of XX century the prospect of traffic collapse for two airports of Paris, Orly and Le Bourget, began to be visible more and more clearly. According to estimates, every 5 years a doubling of passenger traffic took place, and with so many people the terminal buildings by no means could cope. In order to prevent the approaching crisis, in the summer of 1964 it was decided to build a new airport, «Paris Nord».

The place for it was determined in the region Roissy-en-France, away from populated areas, where there was enough free land. It was only required to buy it from the owners of several farms. However, the decision to build the airport was ambiguously perceived by the public, and persistent debates about its expedience went on until 1972. Finally, the problem was solved after the payment of adequate compensation to the victims of the construction of the airport.

The opening of the new main air gate of Paris and all France took place in the presence of Prime Minister P. Messmer in 1974.

During forty years the infrastructure of the airport Charles de Gaulle has undergone a lot of changes, but continues improving in the spirit of new trends. Only one thing remains unchanged – a successful combination of economic efficiency with maximum comfort for passengers.
