Fontainebleau – a suburban residence of kings

The Palace of Fontainebleau, located in the town of the same name, is considered one of the main attractions of the suburbs of Paris. It is the largest of the royal palaces. It has passed through several centuries of French history.

The architecture and the royal entourage of the Palace of Fontainebleau are not inferior to Versailles, without claiming for excessive pomp and luxury. The palace and its surrounding areas were used as hunting grounds. It is notable that the emperor Napoleon Bonaparte spent his time here. Napoleon gave luster to the palace and restored former luxury.

The architecture of the main building of the palace and park complex has some distinctive marks of the Renaissance. The main part of the palace is a staircase in shape of a horseshoe. It was from this staircase that Napoleon announced the Elbe campaign. The rooms which were intended for the royals have an appropriate entourage and pomposity. The presence of gold and precious stones in the decoration underlines the status of their former owners.

Excursions to Fontainebleau, conducted for the tourists, acquaint them with the spacious halls of the palace. The program offers a visit to the Museum of Napoleon. The museum exhibits some items that belonged to Napoleon and his family. The refinement of Marie Antoinette’s apartments and boudoir is emphasized by frescoes, painted by famous masters of that time.

Certainly you must see the room where Napoleon personally signed the renunciation of the imperial throne. The room, in which Louis XIII was born, keeps the sacrament of the king's birth.
